Updates by lab members:
In less than 20 years, humanity has faced three major coronavirus outbreaks. Although the current SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are highly protective against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants, they do not protect against other coronavirus families likes MERS. Our laboratory is on the quest for a universal coronavirus vaccine able to cross-protect against different coronavirus families. In these two interviews, Dr. Penaloza-MacMaster discusses some of our progress on coronavirus vaccines.

Local News:
During the pandemic, Dr. Penaloza was a fervid advocate for getting tested and vaccinated. He was a Task Force Advisor to the Illinois Department of Public Health Director. In the era of misinformation and vaccine hesitancy, it is important for scientists to communicate to the public the importance of science - our lab takes this responsibility very seriously.
